Hibs make player wage request as Easter Road side look to ease financial strain

Hibs are set to ask their players to take a wage cut in addition to the deferrals already in place.

The Hibees highest earners agreed to deferred payments back in April, on the understanding that they would be paid back when the club was in a position to do so.

But it’s now apparent that further cost-cutting measures will be required with the lack of gate receipts putting a big financial strain on clubs across the country.

The Easter Road club will hold talks with players and football staff about reducing salaries and bonuses as the COVID-19 virus continues to put the squeeze on Scottish football.

The majority of non-playing staff were placed on furlough as part of the Government’s job retention scheme and owner Ron Gordon also said that plans to sign new players were on hold until wages were back to normal.

Manager Jack Ross and his squad continued working having agreed to postpone the payment of a portion of their wages until football kicked off again.

But with pre-season training due to begin at East mains next Monday, Gordon and Leeann Dempster have a week to thrash out another agreement that will see pay packets slashed ahead of the big kick-off.

For Hibs that looks like being on August 1, albeit behind closed doors and no indication of when fans are likely to be allowed back through the turnstiles.

A streaming agreement allowing season ticket holders to pay to stream individual games will help, but further cost-cutting measures will be required to help the club through this tough time.

Hibs missed out on £100,000 in prize money after the decision to end the Premiership season based on points per game saw them drop into the bottom six, overtaken by Kilmarnock.

And there will be no Edinburgh derby income either after city rivals’ Hearts saw their relegation confirmed.

Ross is also preparing to make changes to his coaching set-up.

Former St Mirren and Sunderland goalkeeping coach Craig Samson, who joined up with Ross at the Stadium of Light after playing under him and John Potter st St Mirren, is set to link up with his old boss once again.

Samson is currently on the staff at Rochdale but is keen to return to Scotland.

Current goalkeeping coach Alan Combe will leave Hibs.
