Hibs make decision on Joe Newell red card appeal as potential Europa Conference League consequences weighed up

Hibs will not appeal Joe Newell's sending off during Thursday's win over Santa Coloma.

Jack Ross' side took control of their Europa Conference League second round qualifying tie with a commanding 3-0 first-leg victory over the Andorrans at Easter Road.

But the manager admitted his players were "spooked" by referee Vilhjalmur Thorarinsso's first-half decision to show Newell a controversial straight red card.

The Englishman was dismissed following what appeared to be an innocuous challenge on Robert Ramos when sliding in to block the ball.

But the Edinburgh Evening News report Hibs have decided against contesting the decision after studying UEFA protocol.

An appeal would risk Newell being unavailable for the third round should, as expected, his team-mates finish the job away from home next week.

Santa Coloma eventually had two of their own players red carded on the road to defeat.

Martin Boyle helped himself to a brace before Kevin Nisbet's late strike put Hibs on course for a showdown with either Gżira United or Rijeka.

Rijeka hold a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.
