Hibs make £20k donation to support care workers after record sales of 'Thank You NHS' home shirt

Hibernian have made a five-figure donation to the Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation (ELHF) after record sales of their NHS-inspired home shirt.

The Easter Road side gave up the front of their kit in gratitude to health workers putting their own lives at risk to treat and care for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic

The 'Thank You NHS' home kit quickly became a best seller, with shirts being sent out across the world.

However, part of the proceeds from the kit sale - as well as a variety of other fundraising activities - were earmarked for donation to the local NHS charity arm.

And the Hibees have boosted the festive coffers of the ELHF with a £20,000 cash injection to support care workers who have worked through the outbreak since it arrived in Scotland.

Alongside shirt sales, a portion of profits from cardboard cutouts purchased by fans desperate to have their faces in the Easter Road stands while supporters remain locked out of stadia and Hibs-branded face masks were also given over to the foundation.

Chief Executive Leeann Dempster said: “We are delighted to hand over this, our first donation, to such a good cause.

"NHS staff have worked so hard throughout the pandemic to look after not only those suffering from the virus, but others who have needed help through such a difficult time.

"It has been a gruelling time for many of them, and we are pleased that our donations will be used to show that we care for the carers.”

Hibs previously announced their first home match of the campaign with fans permitted entry will be ‘Thank You NHS ’ day, with hundreds of free tickets distributed to frontline and care staff.

The club said it expected to hand over a “six-figure donation” to the charity supporting NHS Lothian by the end of the season.

Part of that fundraising total is to be raised by sales of the reissued single of The Proclaimers' club anthem 'Sunshine on Leith' - which sold out less than a week after it was released for pre-order.
