Hibs loanee Stevie Mallan reveals he brushed up on Turkish game after debut Malatyaspor strike

Stevie Mallan revealed how doing his homework on Turkish football helped him star on his Yeni Malatyaspor debut after hauling his new club to a draw against Goztepe.

The Hibernian loanee made a surprise switch to the mid-table Super Lig outfit on deadline day after struggling for game time at Easter Road.

The long-range specialist wasted little time in getting acquainted with his new surroundings, following in from his own effort to place the rebound in the far corner and draw his side level six minutes before the break.

A second late equaliser, this time from teammate Ahmed Ildiz, ensured the club retain an outside chance of reaching the new Europa Conference League.

The 24-year-old, who could join his new side permanently in the summer, admitted he brushed up on the league standard before jetting out to join up with training.

Mallan added: "I jumped at the chance of coming here and I hope I can help to improve the side.

“I made a point of watching as much football in Turkey as I could before I moved out here.

"I really enjoyed the game. I knew it would be difficult because we were playing a good side, but it's nice to score on your debut obviously."

Malatyaspor stay tenth in the league following the point, while Goztepe are three points behind in 11th.

Manager Hamza Hamzaoglu said: "He [Mallan] made a really good first impression in what was a difficult game as an introduction to Turkish football.

"We made a lot of signings during the window and we hope they will make a big difference to us."
