Hibs injury update as Jack Ross weighs up Betfred Cup semi-final options amid duo's training return

Jack Ross has received an injury boost ahead of Hibernian's Betfred Cup semi-final clash with St Johnstone after Kyle Magennis and Ofir Marciano returned to first team training.

The former St Mirren midfielder has endured a stuttering, injury-hit start to his career in green and white after impressing in fleeting appearances since arriving from the Buddies in October.

The 22-year-old scored his first goal for the Easter Road side in the 1-1 draw with Dundee United prior to Christmas, but limped out of that game with a hamstring issue and has not featured since.

Marciano meanwhile was substituted during the win over St Mirren days later after suffering a calf strain and has been replaced by new signing Matt Macey following Dillon Barnes' return to parent club QPR.

Ross has added to his midfield options in the January window with new recruits Chris Cadden and Jackson Irvine making their debuts in Saturday's 2-0 win over Kilmarnock - Hibs' first in four games.

And the Easter Road boss admitted his previously lean squad is slowly taking on increasing depth as a number of players make their returns.

He said: "We said about having the depth and we have Kyle Magennis back training as well so it's another one to add to that.

"We do think there is good competition among the group and you hope that brings out the best in individual players.

"I will decide at the beginning of the week what we think is the best group to go with but those options we will have from the bench will be good for us."

Defender Sean Mackie, who has a thigh injury, remains a concern while Scott Allan is still some way off a return to first team action as he continues to battle back from an undisclosed medical issue.

Playmaker Joe Newell suffered a groin issue in Monday's draw with Celtic and sat out the win over Killie, but his status for next weekend's Hampden date with the Perth club is unknown.

Callum Davidson's side secured a 1-0 win over St Mirren at McDiarmid Park on Saturday courtesy of a Chris Kane goal.
