Hibs given green light for 'full contact' training as Scottish Government backs SPFL plans

Scottish Premiership clubs may return to full contact training from Monday after gaining Scottish Government approval.

Hibernian returned to East Mains last week, but have only been allowed to return for pre-season in small groups as the country continues to take action on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sessions at the Hibernian Training Centre have been staggered, with manager Jack Ross and his coaching staff taking charge of several teams of players throughout the day.

But the squad will be able to train as one from Monday ahead of the proposed August restart after the Government sanctioned the change for Premiership sides.

Players will still be required to fill out daily COVID-19 questionnaires and undergo temperature checks before entering the East Lothian facility.

Hibs' Head of Football Science and Medicine, Nathan Ring, told the club website the squad had been "lucky" with sympathetic weather conditions allowing them to continue their strength and conditioning preparations outdoors.

Clubs outside of the top flight are still not allowed to return to training, meaning Hearts have to wait until they get the green light to get their preparations for the new campaign underway.

A statement from the Joint Response Group said: “The JRG can now confirm that ministers have formally approved full contact training for Scottish Premiership clubs from tomorrow, Monday 29 June.

"We would therefore encourage clubs to inform all Team Staff as soon as possible to facilitate the updated guidance & clarify that the approval for full contact training is inclusive of all Phase 4 requirements outlined in the JRG Return to Training protocols reissued on Friday."
