Hibs get Scottish Cup final ticket boost as SFA applies to increase maximum attendance

There could be up to 2000 fans in attendance at this month’s Scottish Cup final.

Hibs and St Johnstone lock horns at Hampden on 22 May and there could well be fans in the stadium after the Scottish FA and UEFA came to an agreement despite the ground being under the European governing body’s control ahead of Euro 2020.

Chief exec Ian Maxwell convinced beaks in Nyon to open up the national stadium to fans after Covid restrictions eased across Scotland.

That was approved on Tuesday after the Scottish Government agreed that more than 500 punters would be permitted to go to the game.

But now Maxwell is hoping he can persuade authorities that up to four times that number can get through the turnstiles and will apply for special permission to increase the maximum capacity, reports the Daily Record.

A UEFA statement read: “UEFA has been able to find a solution with the SFA to allow a limited number of fans for the Scottish Cup Final.”

Fans are clearly excited at the latest developments, with the Easter Road club having to release a statement asking them to stop phoning the ticket office.

The number of tickets available is still be to be confirmed, but happy Hibees are desperate to get their hands on briefs for their first Scottish Cup final appearance since 2016.

It read: “It is positive news to hear UEFA` have given approval to the SFA to have limited fans at the Scottish Cup Final. The precise number of fans is still to be determined and will depend upon gaining approval from the Scottish Government.

“We will update fans soon about how tickets will be distributed.”

Jack Ross’ side could clinch third place in the Premiership with a draw away at Aberdeen tonight, leaving them free to focus on the final in less than two weeks’ time.
