Hibs earn six-figure boost from St Johnstone Betfred Cup win as prize money doled out to clubs

Hibernian will pocket a six-figure cash boost from their participation in the Betfred Cup despite crashing out of the competition at the semi-final stage to winners St Johnstone.

Shaun Rooney headed in the only goal of the game at Hampden as Callum Davidson’s side left Glasgow with the first League Cup triumph in their history courtesy of a 1-0 success over Premiership rivals Livingston.

The Saints were worthy winners in the last four when they breezed beyond a below par Hibs side at the national stadium in January to claim a commanding 3-0 win.

Former Hibees Efe Ambrose and Marvin Bartley were unable to halt the Perth side on their charge as Davidson secured silverware in his first season as manager.

It will deliver a boost to the club’s coffers to the tune of £300,000 after the total amount of prize money on offer in the competition rose by 17 per cent to over £2.6 million at the start of the season.

Hibs, as losing semi-finalists, will also net a share of those spoils, being awarded £100,000 for making it to the latter stages of the competition.

Runners-up Livi earned £140,000 for their part in the showpiece, while St Mirren will also pick up £100,000 after losing to The Lions in the other last four tie.

Former Easter Road stars Callum Booth, Liam Craig and David Wotherspoon all played a part on the winning side.

Saints, who posted a small loss of just £20,000 in their recent accounts, take home more than Scottish Cup winners Celtic for their victory, who had their prize money capped at £240,000 following victory over Hearts in December.

The minimum amount offered to teams for their participation in the tournament, even those who finished bottom of their groups in the opening stage, was £20,000.

Hibs face St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park next weekend before a trip to losing finalists Livi on March 20 in the final game before the Premiership split.
