Hibs' Drey Wright thanks NHS staff following birth of premature twins

Hibernian may be gearing up for a season in which they pay tribute to the efforts of those working in the National Health Service during the coronavirus pandemic - however new signing Drey Wright has more cause than most to issue a message of gratitude.

The winger revealed how he became a father to twins born eight weeks prematurely at the start of lockdown, recalling sleepless nights and multiple trips to two hospitals during a "tough" period.

The Easter Road side have forgone a sponsorship logo on the front of their shirts for the 2020/21 campaign, instead displaying a motif reading 'Thank You NHS ".

But the 25-year-old had his own message of thanks to medics after enduring a stressful period before inking his Easter Road contract.

"It was tough. I am not going to lie," Wright said.

"They were in the intensive care unit for three weeks or so and they came out a week before the games were all called off.

"I had a couple of nights sleeping in the guest bedroom but the games were called off and I never actually returned to McDiarmid Park.

"The first few weeks, we were up at the hospital every day, seeing how they were getting on.

"The care they got from the staff at both hospitals, one in Glasgow and then in Forth Valley, was brilliant."

The former Colchester United player was one of Jack Ross' top targets over the summer months, joining alongside Alex Gogic and Kevin Nisbet.

He joined the Easter Road club on a free transfer after knocking back a contract at former club St Johnstone following the prematurely ended season.

Wright admitted it was something of a risk turning down a guaranteed deal with two new arrivals, but revealed it was one he had to take to make the step up.

He said: "It was a risk on my part but ultimately one I felt I had to take and I'm very pleased it worked out and so is my family.

"It was nice in a certain way to be more involved, to be in and around it a bit more.

"I feel my partner benefited from having the help, especially with it being twins and double the work."
