Hibs' Chris Cadden under Scotland consideration as Steve Clarke runs rule over wing back

Hibernian full back Chris Cadden could be in the frame for a call up to the Scotland squad when Steve Clarke names his side for this month’s World Cup qualifiers.

The 24-year-old has been in impressive form since arriving at Easter Road from MLS outfit Columbus Crew in January, shining in a role as right wing back.

The versatile former Motherwell man previously described his two caps in the national side’s Latin American tour in 2018 as ‘the pinnacle of [his] career’.

And he could be handed the opportunity to crash Steve Clarke’s Euro 2020 party should he impress in the March international triple-header against Austria, Israel and the Faroe Islands.

According to The Scotsman, Cadden is among a clutch of players under consideration for a place in the squad to compete with Stephen O’Donnell and Liam Palmer for the right-sided wing back position.

Scotland’s excess of left-wing backs, led by captain Andy Robertson, has forced previous managers to shoehorn Arsenal and former Celtic defender Kieran Tierney in on the opposite flank, but he is now settled as one of a back three.

O’Donnell started the play-off win over Serbia when the Tartan Army booked their return to the international tournament stage for the first time since 1998 with a victory in Belgrade, but has been in inconsistent form for Motherwell this season.

Cadden was substituted early in the second half in Hibs’ defeat to St Johnstone last weekend after starting the match as a more conventional winger, but his energetic bursts from deep opposite teenager Josh Doig helped Jack Ross’s side embark on a four-game winning run last month.

He will have one more chance to catch Clarke’s eye before Tuesday’s squad announcement when Hibs go to Ross County this weekend.
