Hibs boss Jack Ross hails Jamie Murphy impact as he insists forward can get 'better and better'

Hibernian boss Jack Ross is convinced Jamie Murphy can get "better and better" after his strike in the win over Dundee ensured the men in green and white would have one eye on Sunday's Betfred Cup quarter-final draw.

The forward, who will join on a permanent deal at the end of the season after a year long loan from Rangers, raced on to Kevin Nisbet's through ball just before the interval to fire into the far corner for the only goal of the game at Easter Road as the Leith outfit eased beyond their Championship opponents.

It was Murphy's second goal of the campaign after opening his account in last week's draw with Celtic, but Ross feels there is more to come from his summer recruit after a staggered start to his Hibs career.

"It was an excellent goal," said Ross.

"I think we showed those moments of quality in the game and that was one of them.

"It looked relatively straightforward but Jamie's two touches and then his final bit of quality to finish is excellent and that has been reflective of how he has played in recent matches as well."

The 31-year-old was thrown in for his Easter Road debut against Aberdeen earlier in the campaign despite not having trained with his teammates leading up to the game and later limped out of the 3-1 win over Brora Rangers with an injury that kept him out until the end of October.

A return in the defeat to Hearts at Hampden kicked off a run of starts culminating in the opener in the 2-2 draw with Celtic before laying on the second that afternoon for strike partner Nisbet.

Murphy suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury that kept him out for much of the 2018/19 season, but Ross insists he has no qualms over his fitness as he backed the forward to continue his purple patch in front of goal.

He said : "I think what we have seen in recent weeks is the benefit of him playing consistently because he had a little injury so this is the first time he has really been in a consistent run of games.

"His career history points to the fact that he can handle that. He's played in England where you have to churn out a lot of matches, I think he enjoys that aspect of it.

"He's just looking better and better. The next part is challenging him to produce assists and goals and if you look back at his last few games, he's done that."
