Hibs Betfred Cup clash with Forfar in doubt after positive test forces Loons to forfeit Dundee tie

Hibernian's Betfred Cup clash with Forfar Athletic has been thrown into doubt after the League One club were forced to forfeit their tie at Dundee over a positive coronavirus test.

Jack Ross's men are due to travel to Station Park next Tuesday for their third Group B fixture of the competition.

However, there are now fears that game may not take place following the decision to cancel The Loons' meeting with James McPake's side.

In a statement, the SPFL confirmed Jim Weir's side had informed league bosses they "could not fulfil the fixture" and the player involved was now self-isolating.

Test and trace protocols have also been initiated to establish whether other members of the squad should be forced into quarantine.

Should that happen, it is likely the Loons will be unable to play any of their games - including their first competitive fixture with Hibs since 1971.

Premiership Kilmarnock are also set to start their campaign with a 3-0 loss after the entire squad at Rugby Park was forced into self-isolation following six positive tests among the playing squad.

It means Falkirk were awarded the three points, with Championship Dundee set to gain the same advantage.

Hibs face Highland League winners Brora Rangers on Wednesday before a trip to Cove Rangers on Saturday.

An SPFL spokesman said: “Unfortunately, this is the second of tonight’s scheduled Betfred Cup fixtures which we have required to cancel and is further evidence of the very challenging season we are facing.

“We have real sympathy for Forfar Athletic, who were looking forward to competing in their first competitive match of the season. However, consistent with the announcement in respect of the Falkirk v Kilmarnock match, any team unable or unwilling to field a team in a Betfred Cup Round 1 group stage tie will forfeit the match on the basis of a 3-0 defeat. Accordingly, Dundee FC have been awarded a 3-0 win in the tie.

“We wish the player concerned the very best in his recovery and will continue to liaise with Forfar Athletic in the coming days.”
