Hibs and St Johnstone set to renew Betfred Cup rivalry after semi-final draw

Hibernian will face St Johnstone for a place in the Betfred Cup final at Hampden.

The Easter Road side squeezed past Alloa Athletic in the quarter-final courtesy of a Christian Doidge double to reach the last four for the third time in four years.

Jack Ross's men will now face the Perth side on the weekend of January 23-24 for a place in the final after they eased beyond Championship Dunfermline Athletic on penalties.

The draw at St Mirren Park came after a dramatic evening in which Rangers were dumped out of the competition by the Buddies in stoppage time.

Steven Davis thought he had sent the contest to extra-time with his leveller after a Jamie McGrath double put the hosts 2-1 up eight minutes into the second period.

Connor Goldson's early opener had given Steven Gerrard's side the lead early on, but they were stunned in third minute of time added on when Conor McCarthy volleyed home from close range to end the Gers unbeaten run at 27 games.

The Paisley side will face Livingston in the other semi-final after David Martindale made it four wins from four in temporary charge of Livingston with a 2-0 win over Ross County.

The ties will be played across the weekend of January 23-24, with the final taking place on February 28.

It's the third time in recent memory that Hibs and St Johnstone have met at this stage of the competition.

The then-First Division Saints came close to an upset against the men in green and white at Tynecastle in 2007, taking the game to extra time before goals from David Murphy and Abdessalam Benjelloun sent John Collins' men to the final - where they would lift the trophy with a 5-1 win over Kilmarnock.

In 2016, roles were reversed but the outcome was the same, John McGinn scoring the winner for Championship Hibs at Tynecastle to send the Easter Road side to Hampden.

They would come up short on that occasion however, losing late on to Ross County.
