Hibs and St Johnstone fans get Scottish Cup final green light as SFA strike UEFA 'solution'

A limited number of Hibs and St Johnstone fans will be permitted to attend the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden.

The SFA 's showpiece fixture had looked set to remain a lockout at the national stadium due to UEFA ordering building works to take place ahead of Euro 2020.

But Record Sport revealed on Tuesday that Hampden chief Ian Maxwell had made a late plea to reach a compromise that would open up the gates to a small number of supporters.

And his intervention looks to have yielded a positive result - with lucky punters from both sides now set to get access to the May 22 showdown.

In a statement given to the BBC, a spokesperson for European football's governing body said: “UEFA has been able to find a solution with the Scottish FA to allow a limited number of spectators for the Scottish Cup Final.”

Exact numbers remain unconfirmed but a loosening of Scotland's Covid-19 restrictions from May 17 will permit up to 500 spectators at live outdoor events without the need for prior permission.

The SFA has now asked for permission from the Scottish Government to allow for more.

A statement released on Tuesday evening read: "The Scottish FA has today received approval from UEFA to a revised proposal that will enable a limited number of supporters to attend the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park on May 22.

"We have now made a submission to Scottish Government for permission to increase the number of spectators from the maximum 500 permitted under Level 2 restrictions.

"We are grateful to UEFA for removing the condition that required the final to be played behind closed doors, after the postponement of the tie from May 8 to 22 due to the suspension of football during the second wave of the pandemic.

"We are pleased that UEFA have now agreed to a proposed solution prior to Hampden Park hosting four matches, each in front of 12,000 supporters, as part of UEFA EURO 2020.

"We await a positive response from the Scottish Government and will communicate final confirmation of maximum supporter numbers with Hibernian and St Johnstone as soon as possible to enable ticket sales to proceed."

Hibs and Saints booked their places in the final at the weekend with wins over Dundee United and St Mirren, respectively.
