Hibs ace Kevin Nisbet hopes first Scotland goal leads to starting slot at Euros

Confident Kevin Nisbet is flying high after his first Scotland goal and hopes he can be the man to fire the national side to glory in the group stages of Euro 2020.

The Hibs striker netted in last night's 2-2 draw against Netherlands and his display will give boss Steve Clarke food for thought as he prepares to pick his starting 11 for the Group D opener against Czech Republic on June 14.

Scotland have another warm-up match against Luxembourg on Sunday before they get down to business in their first major tournament for 23 years and Nisbet, who has just two caps, said: "I thought I would take the friendlies as a chance to impress.

“I think I’ve done well in training so far and I think that’s why the gaffer put me on - because I have been doing well.

“I've taken my chance and scored.

“There are a lot of places up for grabs in the team, with a lot of people trying to impress and get a starting spot.

“I’m a very confident person, I’ve always said I’d score goals wherever I play and I am doing that.

“We’ve got Lyndon [Dykes] and Che [Adams] who can both score goals for Scotland so that’s us now got three players who can score goals for Scotland.

“The manager definitely has options. It’s good to go and get minutes and influence these games.

“You want to be in the manager’s thoughts and you want to impress. Thankfully I scored to ensure I did that.

“It’s now about me continuing to replicate that performance and carry on scoring goals for Scotland.

“I was delighted because scoring for your country has to be the pinnacle of your career. "

Scotland put in an impressive performance in Portugal, with a controversial late Memphis Depay free-kick denying them a shock victory.

And having seen seven players left behind - including David Marshall and Stephen O'Donnell - at their training base in Spain after the fallout from John Fleck's positive Covid test, Nisbet reckons the Scots have shown just how good the 26-man squad is.

Nisbet added: "It’s a very strong group, as we’ve just shown.

“That’s probably seven strong starters we’ve left behind, some big names in our team, so to then go out and put in a performance like that shows the strength in depth in this squad.

“We said before the game that we just wanted to put in a good performance and lay down a good marker for the Euros, we’ve done that.

“We’re delighted and I think we’ll be ready to make a good start to the group.

“It’s a bit disappointing the way their goal went in, I don’t think it was a free-kick, it was very soft.

“But take nothing away from them, he’s put it in the top corner.

"We’ll take that, 2-2 against a team with world class players and we go into the Luxembourg game full of confidence.
