HGVs carrying huge bridge travelling at 12mph on M4 and M32 could cause delays

Motorists are being warned to expect delays as lorries carrying a huge bridge will travel on the M4 and M32 next week.

The HGVs will not exceed 12mph during the journey from Belgium to Bath, on Tuesday (May 19).

Two loads - each is 5.2m wide and 34m long - will be escorted by police along the M4, M32, A4174, A4, A36 and A367 to Corn Street, Bath.

Drivers have been urged to 'ideally avoid' the route between 10.30am and 12.30pm by Avon and Somerset Police.

A spokesperson for Bath and North East Somerset Council said the 60m long steel bridge ‘superstructure’ is destined to span the River Avon at the Bath Quays site.

It will be the first new crossing point over the river in 100 years.

Councillor Tim Ball, cabinet member for Housing, Planning and Economic Development, said: “During the current Covid-19 crisis we have continued to make progress at the site under strict social distancing rules to help our future prosperity and contribute positively to Bath’s recovery when we all emerge from the current measures.

"This will be needed to help the local economy mitigate the impact of coronavirus as well as encourage more walking and cycling.”
