HGV 'spy cab' catches driver texting on his mobile phone at the wheel of a pick-up truck on the M60 motorway

This is the shocking moment a 'danger driver' was filmed sending a text message behind the wheel of a pick-up truck on the busy M60 motorway.

The film - recorded by a police officer inside a covert HGV cab - shows the man with no hands on the wheel at one point as the truck overtakes a blue hatchback.

Highways bosses have released the footage, taken near Eccles in Salford, as they revealed the worrying results of a 12-month operation.

More than 3,000 dangerous drivers were filmed by police officers concealed inside three unmarked HGV cabs deployed by Highways England across the country.

The spy cabs have been used by a total of 29 police forces, including Greater Manchester Police under Operation Tramline.

They are all fitted with de-restricted speed limiters, meaning they can travel above the national speed limit, and flashing lights have been fitted by police forces to use in emergencies.

Officers inside the cabs film evidence by pulling up alongside vehicles before offending drivers are pulled over by police cars following behind.

Across Greater Manchester 783 vehicles were stopped for a total of 796 offences.

The statistics show 190 drivers were caught on a mobile phone at the wheel and 184 for not wearing a seatbelt.

A total of 29 motorists were classed as being 'not in proper control' of their vehicles and 28 were stopped for speeding.

Police went on to issue 59 penalty charge notices and file 720 traffic offence reports, which require drivers to attend an education course.

There were also 10 prosecutions in Greater Manchester.

Nationally over the last 12 months to March, the cabs were used to record more than 3,500 offences, including 900 in the North West alone.

The man filmed in the pick-up truck on the M60 was ordered to attend a driver training course, Highways England said.

Head of road safety Richard Leonard said: "Hundreds of thousands of drivers use our roads every day and the vast majority are sensible behind the wheel, but some are putting themselves and others at risk.

"We introduced the three new HGV supercabs last year to help keep the roads safe and tackle dangerous driving by people who have either got into bad habits or are simply ignoring the law.

"We hope they will encourage everyone to think about what more they could do to improve how they drive."

Other footage included a lorry driver using his mobile phone to make a bank card payment as he travelled along the M40 near Leamington Spa.

Highways England said he was seen holding his credit card in one hand and his phone in the other.

And on the A38 near Derby, a van driver was spotted with no hands on the wheel as he used one hand to change gear and the other to hold his mobile phone.

National Police Chiefs' Council lead for roads policing, Chief Constable Anthony Bangham, said: "We remain committed to tackling those who take unnecessary risks with their own safety and the safety of others on our roads by allowing themselves to be distracted while driving. The consequences of these actions are often devastating."
