Heyman keeps Canberra's W-L season alive

A record-equalling strike by Canberra's Michelle Heyman has highlighted a sensational 4-1 win over previously-undefeated Brisbane in the W-League.

Heyman joined Matildas superstar Sam Kerr on 70 W-League goals with her 29th-minute strike at Viking Park on Sunday.

The win means Canberra move within two points of fourth-placed Melbourne Victory on the ladder with both teams having three games to play.

Brisbane, who could have wrapped up a finals spot with a win, were stunned when they slipped to a 3-0 deficit inside the opening half-hour.

Nikki Flannery opened the scoring in the 10th minute when her attempt took a heavy deflection off Roar defender Kim Carroll into the net.

Grace Maher doubled the lead 13 minutes later when her long-range strike sailed over Roar goalkeeper Morgan Aquino before Heyman got in on the act with her long-awaited record-equalling strike.

The ex-Matilda, who came out of retirement to play for Canberra this season, has now scored seven goals this campaign.

The league's leading goalscorer, Emily Gielnik, notched her ninth of the season to get one back for the Roar just before halftime but United restored their three-goal advantage in the second half when Aquino was again caught out from distance by Bianca Galic.

The loss was doubly frustrating for second-placed Roar in captain Clare Polkinghorne's 150th appearance for the club given they had a chance to close the gap on league leaders Sydney FC after the Sky Blues fell to just their second defeat of the season against Adelaide on Saturday.

Goals from Maruschka Waldus and Mallory Weber were enough for the Reds in captain Dylan Holmes' final game before heading to Sweden to join BK Hacken, pushing third-placed Adelaide closer to their first W-League finals appearance.

Victory kept up their good run of form with a 1-0 win over Western Sydney on Thursday.
