Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy is far from convinced that Heung-min Son has made the correct decision by signing a new contract with Tottenham.
The South Korean forward, who scored 17 goals in the Premier League last season, has put pen to paper on a deal which will keep him in North London until 2025.
Now 29, Son is yet to win a major trophy in his career, with some of the opinion that time is running out for him to earn some silverware.
And speaking to talkSPORT, Murphy suggested now would have been a good time for him to make a big move in search of glory.
“Players are very different,” Murphy said. “When somebody is content and enjoying life and enjoying their football, not everybody is craving the same things.
“I’m sure he is getting a great financial deal, but the chances are he is not going to win very much in the next couple of years at Tottenham.
“That’s the honest fact.
“So he is obviously not that bothered about winning things.”
“I’m talking about every individual player being different in terms of what they want from life and football and their careers.
“It does suggest, to me, like he has kind of given up. He might believe that Tottenham can turn it around and, I don’t know, compete somehow.
“But most people who know football don’t see that happening next season or the next few seasons, if we are honest, with Chelsea, Liverpool and City’s power.
“He has given up that, I think.”
Whether or not Son can achieve success with Spurs may very well depend on if his striking partner Harry Kane can be convinced to stay at the club.
The England star has signalled his desire to leave in the near future, with Manchester City the strong favourites for his signature.
But it is understood the Premier League champions have put a ceiling of £120million on any offer for the 27-year-old.
City open their Premier League campaign away to Spurs on August 15, and both clubs want Kane's future to have been resolved by then.
Personal terms are not a problem, with City ready to hand Kane a five-year deal worth around £350,000-a-week, but negotiations over the fee involved could end up dragging on for weeks.
