Heung-min Son scores twice, refuses to celebrate out of respect for injured Gomes

Tottenham’s Heung-min Son started for his club in their midweek Champions League match against Red Star Belgrade, and scored a brace for Spurs.

He didn’t celebrate either goal, an apparent somber nod to the nightmare injury Everton’s Andre Gomes suffered after a tackle from Son in their Premier League match.

It was a surprise Son was playing at all. He was issued a red card in the Premier League match, but the decision was later rescinded when video replay showed that Gomes broke his foot when running into a different Tottenham player and catching it horribly on the turf.

That wouldn’t have affected the Champions League game, but many people thought Son would sit purely to emotionally recover from the incident. He was visibly sobbing on the field after Gomes suffered the injury.

Via ESPNFC:

“I didn’t want to celebrate because I just wanted to respect the tough situation,” Son told Viasport after the match.

“Of course I still feel really, really sorry about this situation. It’s been a really, really tough few days.

“I realise how lucky I am. The people around me: the supporters, the club, the coaching staff, the players … they all helped me a lot.

“I [hope] Andre Gomes gets well soon and best wishes.”

Here are the highlights from the game, with Son refusing to celebrate a little after the 2:30 mark.
