Heung-Min Son lifts the lid on his military training experience and his road to recovery

For Tottenham Hotspur striker Heung-Min Son the last three months have been something of an emotional rollercoaster.

After scoring a dramatic last-minute winner against Aston Villa at the very end of February to help Spurs record a third successive league win, few would have been able to predict just how the South Korean international's short-term future was about to pan out.

In the midst of the chaotic celebrations at Villa Park, following Son's late winner, which was his fourth goal in three matches, the striker suffered a broken arm and it was feared by head coach Jose Mourinho that he would be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

But following the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, which, of course, forced English football to be sent into shutdown mode in mid-March, Son made the decision to return to South Korea at the end of March, as he continued his recovery back to full strength.

And with football being off of the agenda for sometime, as it seemed at the time, Son made the decision to carry out his mandatory four-week military service in his homeland, meaning he has been keeping himself occupied during the lockdown period without football.

Now back in the UK and back training alongside his Spurs teammates, the forward, who has scored 16 goals this season, has opened up on his time in the military service.

"It was a good experience," Son told Spurs' Twitter account. "I couldn't say everything that I've done but I enjoyed it. The three weeks were tough.

"On the first days no one knew each other so it was a bit weird, but soon we got to know each other. You have to spend every day together, there were ten people in one room so we got very close.

"We were working together, helping each other. In the first days the other guys couldn't even speak to me but by the end we were joking and enjoying together."

His time back in his homeland, of course, meanS he has been very busy over the past few months, despite the blow of having broken his arm.

Reflecting on the last few months and how he has found everything that has gone on, Son continued: "It has been a very busy three months. I felt very bad after the Villa game. I didn't realise how bad the break was.

"I was very emotional after how we had celebrated, scoring in the last minute, and then I went to the hospital in the UK and I saw the x-ray, which was shocking and I couldn't even believe it.

"It was painful because football is my life and one of the things I enjoy most.

"That meant I was away for three months and that was a bit painful. I missed training with these players and being with the guys and not enjoying things without football."

Son is now back in full training with his Tottenham teammates and gearing up for the Premier League restart later this month, which will see Spurs lock horns with Manchester United.
