Heung min-Son dropped by Tottenham as Richarlison brought in to provide ‘energy’ for West Ham clash

Tottenham assistant coach Christian Stellini has explained the thinking behind the decision to drop Heung min-Son for their game against West Ham.

Son was left out in the Premier League for only the second time this season, with Richarlison coming in to the team alongside Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski in a front three.

After winning the Golden Boot last season, Son has struggled for form and has only scored four goals in the Premier League this season.

Antonio Conte is back in Italy as he recovery from gallbladder surgery but Stellini has confirmed the Spurs coach was involved in the decision to drop Son.

Stellini says Spurs wanted to add more “energy” after their defeats against AC Milan and Leicester.

“Me, Antonio and Ryan Mason made the decision,” said Stellini.

“We have a big squad and today we want to use energy. We played many games with Sonny and maybe this game could also be time to have Sonny during the match. This is the reason we have a big squad.

“We hope every time that our players who come in from the bench change the game and give us what we need.”

Son was brought on in the second half and scored to seal a 2-0 win.
