'He's destroyed that field': Canberra star puts world on notice with new record

The only thing faster than Cam Myers' rise to athletics stardom might be the man himself after the Canberra product shattered another record on the world stage.

The ACT star has broken the Australian and Oceania area record in the Bowerman men's mile at the Eugene Diamond League in the United States.

Cam Myers has shattered another record. Pictures Diamond League

Myers set a new benchmark of 3:46.06, with his record-breaking feat coming just a week after he triumphed in a 1500m event in Paris.

If that wasn't enough, the 20-year-old becomes the youngest winner of this race since 2009, and now he is setting his sights on winning gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

"I'm feeling super excited," Myers said.

"That's the first Diamond League I've won. I know I won Paris last week, but it was a non-Diamond League, so I didn't count it.

"It's nice to finally have won one. I think I've got second and third before, so it's nice to have actually won a Diamond League event, specifically the Bowerman Mile.

"I was in good shape. You never know what shape other people are in, so I may as well just capitalise on what I know I am capable of. If someone was to beat me today, fair play to them.

"I just ran hard, I think that gave me the best probability, and in the end I was able to win."

So, did Myers expect to run a mile - which measures 1609 metres - in a time quite like this?

"I just had no clue. You rarely run miles as an Australian, so it was more about testing myself," Myers said.

"I've sort of shifted, I just want to win the races now. I have sort of ticked off the times, and if I focus on winning the races, the times will follow.

"I'm racing at Comm Games in three weeks, so now a good solid training block, and we'll see what comes out there. To win the Comm Games would be awesome."

United States duo Yared Nuguse (3:46.61) and Ethan Strand (3:46.97) rounded out the podium.

"He's destroyed that field," a commentator said.

"Nuguse left it too late, when he moved round the outside and tried to attack, Cam Myers had gone.

"[Myers had] kicked it hard, visibly accelerated with about 100m to go, there's more in the tank for this young fella. He's strong, he's fast and he's just 20. Watch this fella."
