‘He’s a Person I’ve Known for a Long Time’: Don Jr.’s Wedding Becomes Trump’s Latest PR Nightmare as He Whines About Being ‘Killed’ by the Press

President Donald Trump just turned his son’s wedding into another public relations headache, complaining that the timing is terrible for him and whining about how the press will “kill” him no matter what he does. During a Thursday, May 21, 2026, Oval Office press conference, a reporter asked if he’d be attending Donald Trump Jr.’s Saturday wedding to Bettina Anderson. His response made it clear the event is less about his son and more about his own inconvenience.

“I’m going to try and make it,” Trump said, according to Mediaite. “I’m in the midst – I said, ‘You know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things. That’s one I can’t win on. If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed – by the fake news, of course, I’m talking about.’” He then awkwardly added, “But he’s uh – and a very – person I’ve known for a long time. And hopefully, they’re going to have a great marriage.”

The wedding, described as a “small little private affair,” is set to take place over Memorial Day weekend on a private island in the Bahamas. The guest list includes a tight circle of family and friends, but the optics of a lavish celebration while the Iran war continues have already raised eyebrows. The couple had considered a White House wedding but scrapped the idea over concerns about how it would look.

The planning for the wedding has been on for months

Trump Jr., 48, and Anderson, 39, have been planning the event for months, with Palm Beach socialites throwing an “enchanted garden”-themed bridal shower at Mar-a-Lago in April. The guest list for that event included Ivanka Trump, Lara Trump, Tiffany Trump, Marla Maples, and Trump Jr.’s 19-year-old daughter, Kai.

Anderson’s background ties her to Palm Beach’s elite. Her mother is philanthropist Inger Anderson, and her late father was banker Harry Loy Anderson Jr.

The wedding comes after a messy breakup for Don Jr., who called off his engagement to Kimberly Guilfoyle in 2024 to be with Anderson. The president then appointed Guilfoyle as U.S. Ambassador to Greece, a move that kept her in the political fold but out of the immediate family drama.

Meanwhile, Don Jr.’s ex-wife, Vanessa, is navigating her own personal crisis

Just this week, she revealed that she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer and recently underwent a medical procedure. “I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said per Fox News. “While this isn’t news anyone expects, I’m working closely with my medical team on a treatment plan.”

She thanked her family, kids, and medical team for their support, adding, “I am staying focused and hopeful while surrounded by the love and support of my family, my kids, and those closest to me.” The announcement drew an outpouring of support, including a comment from Ivanka Trump, who wrote, “Praying for your continued strength and a swift recovery. Love you mama.”

Vanessa and Trump Jr. share five children, and she’s largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years. Her relationship with Tiger Woods has also drawn attention, with Woods publicly asking for privacy earlier this year as the couple faced media scrutiny. Vanessa’s post didn’t go into details about her cancer stage or treatment plan, but she made it clear she’s prioritizing her health and recovery.

Even personal milestones in the Trump family become political talking points

Back at the White House, Trump’s complaints about the wedding timing feel especially tone-deaf given the circumstances. The president’s focus on how the press will treat him, rather than the significance of the event itself, only adds to the awkwardness.

The wedding itself is shaping up to be a quieter affair than some of the family’s past celebrations. The Bahamas location was likely chosen to avoid the kind of spectacle a White House wedding would have created. Still, the guest list includes some of the family’s most visible figures, ensuring the event won’t go entirely unnoticed.

For Trump Jr., this wedding marks a new chapter after a highly publicized breakup. His relationship with Anderson has been under scrutiny since he ended things with Guilfoyle.

Trump’s comments highlight his long-standing frustration with media coverage

His claim that he’ll be “killed” by the press whether he attends or not reflects his belief that the media is out to get him, regardless of the circumstances. It’s a narrative he’s pushed for years, but in this case, it comes across as particularly self-absorbed. The wedding isn’t about him, but you wouldn’t know that from his remarks.

The bigger picture here is how the Trump family’s personal lives are constantly under a microscope. Every event, from weddings to health updates, becomes a story with political implications.

Vanessa’s cancer diagnosis, for example, has drawn attention not just for its personal impact but for how it intersects with the family’s public image. Her relationship with Tiger Woods, her connection to the Trumps, and her request for privacy all feed into the larger narrative of a family that can’t escape the spotlight.

Trump’s hesitation about attending is telling. Whether he ultimately shows up or not, his comments have already ensured the wedding will be framed as yet another Trump family drama.
