'Hers is surely one of the most tragic stories of this election' Twitter reacts to Jo Swinson losing her seat

Jo Swinson has lost her seat in Dunbartonshire East to the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Swinson started the campaign believing she could be Prime Minister, but election night turned out to be disastrous for her.

Many people have taken to Twitter to comment on her departure, some praising her losing speech and others unsurprised by the outcome.

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon couldn't hide her excitement at the news.

British writer and politician Daniel Hannan praised Jo for her speech saying she delivered a "gracious and generous concession speech".

Others, such as journalist Nick Robinson, said Jo had had "a grim time since she became leader".

One Twitter user took a more comedic approach to the news, making a joke about Jo's previous ambitions to be Prime Minister.

Paul Brand was sympathetic, saying how she was "reported to be in tears."
He added: "Hers is surely one of the most tragic stories of this election."

One Twitter user said: "Well worth staying up. Jo Swinson loses East Dunbartonshire to plucky young Amy Callaghan by 144 votes. Justice prevails & pride comes before a fall."

Another commented: "Can I just remind people that Jo Swinson could have stoped this devastation & her Party's devastation weeks ago if she had agreed to join a Unity coalition with her Majesty Official Opposition Party.

"I hope she will reflect deeply on her losses & her delusional dream of being PM."

Robery Peston said: "Lib Dem leader narrowly loses seat. It is a night of desperate crisis for the Lib Dems."
