Heroin and cocaine worth more than £21,000 found in Transit van stopped on Moredun Dykes Road

Drugs worth more than £21,000 were found after police pulled over the driver of a white Transit van on Moredun Dykes Road in the early hours of Friday morning.

Road policing officers made the discovery while carrying out patrols in the south of the city at around 1.05am.

The 41-year-old driver was stopped before providing a positive roadside drug test. He was arrested at the scene.

Officers and a specialist police dog then searched the vehicle and found a quantity of class A drugs – including heroin and cocaine with an estimated street value of over £21,000. A three-figure sum of cash was also found along with a "Conductive Energy Device".

A 16-year-old passenger was also arrested for drug offences, and both men have been charged and are scheduled to appear in court on Monday (6 January).

Following the incident, police carried out a related search at an address in East Lothian and this resulted in heroin with an estimated street value of £28,000 being recovered along with three offensive weapons.

Inspector Roger Park of Edinburgh's Road Policing Unit said: “A large amount of controlled drugs have been seized as a result of this proactive stop which involved a number of units working together across the city.

“We continue to target anyone involved in the possession and supply of illegal substances and will always conduct a thorough investigation where information suggests criminality."
