Heroic schoolboy from Cork saves his father's life following a farm accident

A Cork schoolboy is being hailed as a hero after his quick actions saved his father's life following a farm accident.

Brian Philpott's bravery was described as "astonishing" by Kanturk's firefighters after his father, Declan, got crushed between an agitator and the wheel of their tractor.

The authorities were in awe of Brian's life-saving actions and said the incident showed the importance of being alert on the farm.

The incident occurred after they were climbing up the agitator when it fell off the standing pin and pinned Declan so hard he couldn't breathe.

As reported by Cork Beo, Declan had "passed out and was starting to turn blue" before heroic Brian, 13, jumped into the tractor and managed to manoeuvre it forward to free him.

An ambulance soon arrived at the scene along with the Kanturk Fire Brigade who assisted them in getting Declan onto a spinal board and on to the hospital.

They said: "We would like you to meet a young local hero Brian Philpott. Astonishing bravery of a 13-year-old boy who was at hand to help save his father's life.

"Brian Philpott and his dad were mounting the agitator on the rear of the New Holland Tractor when it fell off the stand pinning Declan between the wheel and the agitator.

"Declan could not breath with the weight of the agitator pressed against him which had crushed him in-between that and the tyre, within minutes Declan had passed out and started to turn blue.

"Without thought, Brian jumped in the tractor and drove forward allowing his father to breathe again.

"This incident shows the importance of being alert and aware when using farm machinery and never take it for granted how quickly situations can change around farm machinery.

"We were called to this incident to assist the ambulance who were very quickly on the scene. We had to help make sure Declan was handled in the correct manner from his position on the ground to the spinal board, and then into the ambulance. A further assessment took place before Declan was admitted to hospital."
