Heroic police officers save woman from drowning in freezing brook

Heroic police officers who saved a woman from drowning in a freezing brook have been recognised for their bravery.

PC Golding and PC Burrows rescued the woman after she became stuck in the water at Eagley Brook in Bolton on March 1 of this year.

Police received a concern for the welfare of the woman - who had been reported missing several days earlier -at about midday.

When officers found the woman, she was submerged in the water and trapped in deep mud.

PCs Golding and Burrows managed to negotiated a deep embankment in order to reach her, while three other officers - PC Rourke, PC Ashcroft and PC Atkinson - helped to lift the woman out of the cold water and onto the bank.

Firefighters then helped to get the woman out of the remote woodland, before she was taken to hospital for treatment.

All of the officers involved have since received a divisional commander’s ‘good work minute’ for their handling of the incident.

Superintendent Steph Parker, GMP’s divisional commander for Bolton, said: “Ensuring the public’s safety is our number one priority and I am proud that our officers quick-thinking and teamwork resulted in saving the woman from danger.

“All of them showed professionalism, motivation and dedication and without their response, the situation could have ended very differently.

"Fortunately, the woman is now safe and receiving the treatment she needs.

“I would also like to thank our emergency service colleagues, for their part in the effort to get the woman to the hospital and get her the treatment she needs, as well as the member of the public who reported her in the water.”
