Heroic mum saves baby by cradling her child as plane crashes killing both parents

A baby miraculously survived a plane crash after being held in the arms of his tragic mother who perished on board.

The crash killed both the child's parents but the heroic mum saved the life of the infant as the plane plunged from the sky.

Mayerly Diaz Rojas and husband Fabio Grandas died on the HK 2335-G plane hours after it left Santa Marta heading for Guaymaral.

But their baby son Martin miraculously survived and was found by rescuers.

The infant is said to be in a stable condition and, according to local media reports, is being treated at the Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota University Hospital.

The plane came down in Ubate, Colombia on Tuesday afternoon.

Martin's nanny, Nuris Maza, also died - with the cause of the horror crash not yet known.

The aviation authority say they are investigating what went wrong on board.

In the statement, they said: "According to initial information, the aeroplane had all of its technical documentation up to date."

Mr Grandas was piloting the light aircraft, it is reported.

The Colombian Civil Aviation Authority expressed their "solidarity with the families of the victims" in a statement.

They added: “A baby, who was also travelling in the aeroplane, is being attended at this time in an assistance centre”.

Rescuers found the mother still cradling the baby after using her body to protect it during the crash, local media confirmed.
