Heroic Edinburgh bus driver helps to save man trapped under bus

An Edinburgh mum has spoken of her partner's heroics as he rushed to assist a man trapped below a bus after collision that took place in Leith on Monday night.

Charlee Blackley, 24, said that her partner Jamie Jappy, 28 - who was too modest to tell his story - had to have his heroic exploits shared to remind people that “not all heroes wear capes” and to ensure he gets the recognition he deserves.

Dad Jamie, who is a driver with Lothian buses, went into full adrenaline mode when his bus was waved down by a pedestrian on the evening of Monday November 29.

Charlee said that Jamie was shocked to find a man trapped beneath a fellow Lothian bus.

She added that Jamie did not see the incident taking place but that he sprung into action to help stem the bleeding in the man's head and support him while he was trapped under the bus for around 40 minutes.

On her partner’s heroic actions, she said: “He is too modest to tell his own story but I believe he deserves the recognition as I don’t think he understands how much of a positive impact he had on the situation.

“He realised there was a problem when a member of the public was flagging down the bus to get it to stop and he didn’t see the person physically get hit as he was concentrating on driving the bus.

“But he quickly took control of the situation, letting the other driver calm down as he was understandably in shock, and quickly went under the bus to check if the person underneath was ok.

“When he noticed that the man was bleeding from the head, he attempted to rip his shirt off to tie around it, however before he managed this, someone handed over a scarf and Jamie kept the pressure on the wound while stabilising the man’s head and neck to prevent more injury until the emergency services arrived.

“When they arrived he remained under the bus with the man stabilising his head and talking to him until he was told around 20 minutes later that he could come out and sort himself out as he was shaken and had blood on his hands, shirt and jacket.

“The emergency services then took over fully, and this is all that he told me really.

“He was full of adrenaline, scared and shaken but he knew he had to take control of the situation to make sure the man survived until emergency services arrived.

“He’s had a few sleepless nights since it happened but he’s glad his actions helped to save the man. We are so proud of him. He is amazing! His son Rudi who is four keeps saying to him ‘you’re so clever daddy helping that man.’ We are giving him the support he needs at this time as he’s still shaken up. He keeps going over the situation in his head but we are here for him to make it easier.”
