Heroic cyclist saves home from going up in flames after chip pan fire

A cyclist bravely entered a Nottinghamshire home to stop a chip pan fire.

A grandma and her granddaughter who were at home in Kirby in Ashfield at the time escaped the property and called the fire service after realising there was smoke coming from the kitchen.

A young cyclist passing by saw the commotion and bravely entered the property - removing the chip pan stopping the fire spreading to the rest of the property and then went on his way.

Crews from Ashfield and Edwinstowe arrived at the Welbeck Street home shortly after and extinguished the fire on September 30.

The granddaughter was taken to hospital following smoke inhalation and grandma was checked over by the Ambulance Service.

Area Manager for Prevention and Protection, Damien West, said: “This is a timely reminder that we must remain alert whilst cooking and chip pans can often be dangerous due to the risk of hot oil catching fire.

"Never fill a pan more than one third full of oil and avoid leaving the pan unattended, this can help prevent future incidents like this occurring.

“A thank you goes out to the bravery of the young man who risked his own life to save the home of the two women. If you we’re the heroic bystander please get in touch with the Service so we can pass on our gratitude.

"Although this was a heroic act we do advise people to remain outside in a safe area and to call 999 for our Firefighters to put out the fire.”
