Heroes of Olympus: The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan - review

Percy Jackson is 16 and the hero of the books. He's a Greek demi-god and the son of Poseidon. The first Heroes of Olympus book was set in the Greek camp but this one takes place in the Roman camp. Percy's two friends are also demi-gods. Frank is son of Mars and Hazel is daughter of Pluto.

In this book Percy is given the quest to unleash the God of Death, Thanatos. The villain of the books is Gaya, Mother Earth. That might sound sweet but in Greek and Roman worlds she is not so sweet. She is trying to wipe out all population, just leaving earth. While the God of Death is chained up, the monsters that are trying to kill the demi-gods can return to the living world.

Percy and the other demi-gods have special gifts to help them in their quest. Frank's gift is a spear made of dragon-tooth. When he plants it in the ground a skeleton warrior appears. As Percy is Son of Neptune, his power is that he can control water.

This is my favourite of the Heroes books. It is funny, adventurous and exciting. It is never boring, There are lots of jokes which I really like. This was one of my favourites. A god is hiding in a food store from an army of monsters and he throws a small dark thing at the monsters. One of the monsters shouts "grenade!" and they all run for cover. Then, when it doesn't explode, a monster goes over to look at it and says "A chocolate muffin! You dare threaten me with a chocolate muffin!"

I think these books are as good as Harry Potter, and good for boys and girls to read. There is a glossary at the end of the book which explains some of the greek and roman words. You don't really need it when you read the book but it is interesting anyway. I'm pleased that this is definitely not the end of the series. There are still loads of giants left to beat before the villain Gaya is destroyed.
