Hero war veteran Captain Tom Moore offers message of hope as he raises £12m for NHS

War veteran Captain Tom Moore has captured the attention of millions as he raises a staggering amount of money for the NHS.

The 99-year-old set out to raise £1,000 for the hospital charities by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday at the end of this month.

But in the last 24 hours, the amount he had raised had more than doubled from £5m to £12m - and it's still going up.

And this morning, Captain Tom completed his 100th lap way ahead of schedule.

Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Thursday's Good Morning Britain, Mr Moore said that NHS workers on the front line "deserve everything we can give them" before offering his own message of hope.

He said: "I've always been one for having a future, I always think things will be good.

"We've fought so many battles and we've always won and we're going to win again."

His daughter Hannah appeared with her father on the show and said that he had become "a beacon of hope for people" during challenging times and that the donations were "beyond words".

Mr Moore went on to complete his challenge live on BBC News.

Asked how he was feeling afterwards, he said: "I'm fine and I hope you're all fine too."

There have been calls, including from Piers Morgan, for the veteran to receive a knighthood.

JustGiving said it was the largest amount ever raised on its platform.

At the time of writing Mr Moore's total stood at £12,325,324.11.
