Hero wants reunion with Everton woman whose life he saved at Welsh seaside

A former police officer who saved a young Liverpool woman from drowning 60 years ago is keen to find out how she fared in life.

Kenneth Mort was at Borth-Y-Gest beach in Porthmadog, North Wales, when he spotted 25-year-old Maureen Clinton in the water in difficulty.

Now 88, but 28 at the time, the ex-cop was walking along a cliff with his girlfriend, on a photographic society trip, when the incident happened, on June 11 1961.

He recalled: "I saw what was happening and ran down a wooden staircase, sprinted 100 yards and dived in, swimming another 100 yards.

"There were three of them in the water, two men and a woman.

"It was a very fast current.

"My fiancee helped one of the fellows out, but the other two were further out.

"Their boat had got stuck on a sandbank, and they'd got out to push but none of them could swim.

"I rescued Maureen Clinton, who came from Robson Street in Everton, but sadly her boyfriend, David, from Bootle, was swept away in the very fast current and died.

"The water was very murky and I couldn't see him, sadly.

"I remember reading in the later newspaper reports that Maureen had just been to buy a wedding dress and they came to the beach on motorbikes with side cars.

"I'm curious as to what happened to her, as she probably married someone else.

"It must have been very traumatic at the time.

"I never did speak to her, but at her fiance's inquest, her relative came up to me and thanked me for saving her life.

"I'd love to speak to her now, if she was willing to speak to me."

Mr Thompson was a laboratory assistant, aged 28, reports said.

Mr Mort, who also used to work as an insurance worker, now lives in Sandbach, Cheshire.

The incident was reported in a local paper at the time, and also featured in the Liverpool ECHO the following day.
