Tesco staff rescue woman being screamed at in the street

Supermarket staff have been praised for "rescuing" a woman who had abuse shouted at her by a stranger as she walked to the bus stop.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, had been to a support group in Southport when the man approached her yesterday evening (Wednesday).

She says she was walking to the bus stop when he began shouting at her to tell him where Leyland Road was.

She felt uncomfortable and so decided to walk to the next bus stop, opposite Tesco Express on Eastbank Street.

The man is then said to have followed her, shouting obscenities at her.

The woman then became upset and rang her carer. Her carer told the ECHO : "I asked her to cross the road, find staff in Tesco and put me on the phone to them.

"I spoke to a gentleman and asked if they would look after her while I got a taxi to collect her.

"I then rang All White Taxis, the operator was so lovely and efficient and promised a taxi within minutes.

"He also said the driver would go inside to collect her if she was scared to leave.

"The taxi came straight away and the guy from Tesco walked her to the car. He rescued her."

Store manager Ben Mills said staff welcomed the woman into the store and "kept an eye on her".

He said: "One of my colleagues kept an eye on her until the taxi arrived. He kept his distance, as she was clearly upset, and the taxi arrived quickly."

The incident left the woman very shaken up, though her carer says she wants to give a "massive thank you" to everyone at Tesco Express and All White Taxis.

She added: "The driver was heroic and all concerned have my utmost gratitude."

A Tesco spokesman said: "We are aware of an altercation at our Eastbank Street Express and are grateful to our colleagues who helped out a customer in need."

All White Taxis was also approached by the ECHO.
