Hero saves girl, 2, thrown into bay after crash left car teetering on edge of bridge

A two-year-old girl was thrown from a truck into a bay after a terrifying multi-vehicle smash left eight people in hospital.

In dramatic pictures the vehicle can be seen on its side teetering on the edge of a bridge after the horror smash at about 2.45pm on Sunday.

Officers said that a quick-thinking Good Samaritan leapt from a bridge into the water and rescued the child, who was then flown to hospital.

Ocean City Police said they are now investigating the crash that took place on the Route 90 bridge in Maryland, US.

Officers said the smash involved five vehicles, leaving eight people in hospital, including a two-year-old child who was thrown from a pickup truck with her car seat.

The Ocean City Fire Department declared the situation a “mass casualty incident” (Island Watersports)

She landed in a bay below the bridge and a 'heroic witness' jumped into the water and rescued the child.

Police said in a statement that the toddler was then flown by Maryland State Police Trooper 4 to hospital.

Ocean City police said: "Due to the complexity of the crash, the investigation is ongoing by the OCPD’s Traffic Safety Unit.

"Preliminarily it appears that multiple crashes may have occurred.

"At the time of this release, all of the individuals transported to the hospital have been released, with the exception of the 2-year-old child who remains in stable condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

"The Good Samaritan has asked to remain anonymous at this time."

Wtop News reports that Ryan Whittington, of the Ocean City Fire Department, said: “A Good Samaritan, at the right place at the right time, jumped into the bay to save the baby out of the water.

“A pontoon boat in the area stopped and picked them up, and took them to meet our paramedics.

“The good Samaritan is doing well, I did have the opportunity to speak with him yesterday. I know that our fire chief is going to make contact with him, just thanking him for everything he did without due regard for his own personal safety, actually jumping into the water and saving a child.”
