Hero's welcome for four-year-old Renfrew cyclist Harry after he raised thousands for the NHS

A four-year-old cyclist who raised more than £3,500 for the NHS received a hero’s welcome as he completed the last leg of his charity fundraiser.

Harry Wright challenged himself to cycle five kilometres every week for a month in a bid to help doctors and nurses treat those with Covid-19.

And the kind preschooler ended his 20km challenge in style earlier this month when members of the Glasgow Triumph Motorcycle Club turned out to ride behind Harry on the final stretch of his journey.

The kind gesture was a dream come true for bike enthusiast Harry, who was also met by his proud friends and family on the socially distant finish line.

His mum Kimberley Currie said she couldn’t thank people enough for making the final cycle so special and for donating so generously to his £3,600 fundraising total.

Kimberley told the Express: “Harry’s bike is a green motorbike style so as a surprise five bikers met us at the top of our street and drove behind him on his last stretch to the finishing line.

“The guys from the Glasgow branch of the Triumph Owners Motorcycle Club made Harry’s day that bit more special and a day he definitely won’t ever forget.

“He even got to sit on one of the bikes at the end.

“All our family were waiting with confetti cannons and cheers for our little hero. Even a couple of his little nursery friends came to wave to him at the end.”

An emotional day for everyone, Harry had decided to raise funds for the NHS as he thought it would help people recover from Covid-19 more quickly.

The thoughtful Glendee Nursery pupil was eager to follow in the footsteps of Captain Tom Moore who he had watched raise incredible sums on TV.

And after completing a tough 5km ride to his cousin’s house to sing happy birthday through the fence, the Arkeleston youngster pledged to take on his own charity challenge.

He thought he could raise £20 for his efforts but having been taken to the hearts of people across Renfrewshire and beyond, the youngster raised a whopping £3,600.

Kimberley said: “It was all his idea. He wanted to do it for the NHS because he had seen things on TV about how the doctors and nurses are helping people.

“He set the target for £20 as in his head that buys a lot.

“I really want to say thank you to the people of Renfrew for cheering, tooting their horns and giving him as much love as possible during his cycles.

“He went to bed that night asking if he could do another cycle to raise more money again.

“I think I have a mini Sir Chris Hoy on my hands.”
