Hero 'pulls man to safety' after massive Mersey search operation

A passing hero is believed to have pulled a man to safety from the Mersey last night.

Reports a male had entered the river sparked a massive search and rescue effort launched at around 11pm on Saturday.

The coastguard, RNLI teams, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police were all involved in the operation, with the coastguard scrambling a helicopter over the Mersey.

Flight tracking data showed the helicopter looping up and down the river, focusing on the Wirral shore between Birkenhead and Tranmere.

The activity could be seen and heard over parts of south Liverpool.

The search was prompted by reports a man had entered the water near Tranmere, the coastguard said.

The organisation's team was supported by New Brighton RNLI and a pilot vessel as the emergency services sought the man.

Nobody was found in the water but Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, which had been informed of the incident by the coastguard at 11.17pm, said it was believed he had been pulled to safety by a member of the public and then left the area.
