Hero PSNI officers who saved man's life awarded top national honours

Three PSNI officers who saved a man's life have been awarded top national honours.

The Lurgan officers were alerted to search for a vulnerable man on October 9 last year, who left a suicide note and then set off on his motorcycle.

The officers located the man on the bridge over the M1 in Boconell Lane, Lurgan.

Constable Hillen and another officer who cannot be named grabbed the man and held him until further assistance arrived.

The third officer Constable Orr then arrived on the scene and managed to help his colleagues handcuff the man's wrist to the railing to prevent him falling before bringing him safely to the other side.

Now the three hero cops are set to receive Royal Humane Society Testimonials on Parchment for their actions and they have also won the personal praise of Andrew Chapman, Secretary of the Society.

As he announced the awards at the Society’s London headquarters Mr Chapman said:

“This was one of the closest run potential disasters we have ever dealt with.

“The three officers involved here did a superb job in grabbing him and preventing him falling into the traffic below.

"One cant even begin to think what they were going through as he held him dangling above the motorway."

No date has yet been fixed for presentation of the awards but it is expected to take place in the near future.

T he Royal Humane Society was founded in 1774. The Queen is its patron and its president is Princess Alexandra. It is the premier national body for honouring bravery in the saving of human life.
