Hero police rescue seriously hurt man who had fallen from bridge into river

A man has been rescued from a river after falling from a bridge in Tameside this morning.

Police were called out to concerns for the welfare of a man on Gibraltar Lane, in Haughton Green, at around 5.30am on Tuesday (June 8).

As they arrived at the scene, officers discovered that a man had fallen into the River Tame.

Police entered the water and were able to rescue the man by moving him to the river bank with a rope.

Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after police, and the man was then taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The man suffered serious injuries, North West Ambulance Service told the Manchester Evening News .

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 5:30am this morning, officers were called to a concern for welfare of a man on Gibraltar Lane, Denton.

"Officers arrived to find a man had fallen into the River Tame.

"Officers entered the water and were able to safely move him to the river bank using a rescue line.

"He was taken to hospital for treatment."

A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We attended the scene after a call from police at 5.44am reporting that someone had fallen from a bridge into the river.

"We have taken a man to the hospital with serious injuries."

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a number of police vehicles and fire engines on Gibraltar Lane earlier this morning as well as paramedics, as emergency services rushed to the man's rescue.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was approached for comment.
