Hero pensioner tackled knife-wielding robber holding up store

A have-a-go hero pensioner stopped a knife-wielding robber from holding up his local shop.

George Adams, 71, bravely tackled James Taylor at the store in Cambuslang, near Glasgow in April this year.

George grabbed the blade from the 63 year-old and pinned him to the ground until police arrived.

It lead to Taylor today being jailed for 14 months at Glasgow Sheriff Court .

He pled guilty to attempted robbery.

The hearing was told how Taylor confronted worker Shabnam Chaudhry and demanded cash.

She thought the raider was joking as he was a regular at the store.

Prosecutor Mark Allan said: “She laughed and asked what Taylor wanted.

“Taylor stated: 'I’m not kidding. Give me your money'. He produced a knife from his jacket pocket.”

Miss Chaudhry failed in trying to calm Taylor down.

George then entered the shop - and clocked Taylor with the blade.

Mr Allan said: “He made attempts to calm Taylor and asked him to put the knife down.

“He told Taylor that he was frightening Miss Chaudhry.”

"Taylor refused to drop the knife but was disarmed by Mr Adams.

"He took Taylor to the ground and got hold of the knife."

Police were alerted and Taylor was still on the ground when officers arrived.

Taylor made no reply when quizzed about the incident.
