Hero pair dive into River Liffey to save drowning person at O'Connell Bridge

Two heroes jumped into the River Liffey at O'Connell Bridge to save a person from drowning today.

However, treacherous conditions meant that all three got into difficulty and a water crew from the Dublin Fire Brigade had to be called as they were swept towards the sea.

Fortunately, the DFB crew managed to rescue all three from the bitterly cold, fast-moving waters, just before midday.

The person who had fallen in first was taken to hospital, a spokesperson said, adding that the two heroes declined medical treatment.

Dublin City Council told Dublin Live: "Reports indicated that two people had entered the water to help the casualty.

"The casualty was removed at Butt Bridge by Dublin Fire Brigade and was transported to hospital."

Dublin Fire Brigade spoke of the incident online: "We're currently attending a water rescue at Custom House Quay, rescue swimmers have taken a number of people to safety"

A DFB spokesperson told Dublin Live: "One person entered the river at O'Connell Bridge. Two others jumped in to save the person.

"Fast flowing river after recent heavy rainfall meant they were at Custom House Quay before they were able to get out of the water."

The condition of the third person is currently unknown.
