Hero off-duty cop helps save choking baby

A hero off-duty cop stepped in to help save a baby choking on a piece of food.

Kamren Khan was driving along Bolton Road in Sudden, Rochdale, when he saw two women struggling with a baby in their arms as he passed by.

The little girl is believed to be around 18 months old.

Mr Khan turned his car around and pulled over beside them.

He told how he found the toddler's mother and grandmother 'clearly distressed' and holding the baby girl over.

"I knew she was choking," said Mr Khan, a police constable serving with Greater Manchester Police.

"They were both trying to get the baby's airway open."

He offered to help immediately.

Mr Khan said: "One of them asked if I was medically trained.

"I said I was a police officer.

"This seemed to appease the mother and she allowed me to get hold of the child.

"I tried to check her airway and her grandmother told me she had been choking on food.

"I rang for an ambulance and tried to calm the little girl down."

Mr Khan said thankfully, the baby was suddenly sick and her airway opened.

"It wasn't a sight I liked to see - when they were struggling," he added.

"The grandmother and mother thanked me. The grandmother said I calmed the mother down enormously as she was panicked and in shock.

"The ambulance checked out the baby and she was allowed to return home."

Mr Khan said he wanted to highlight the importance of people having even basic first aid training.

And he said he was left 'shocked' by the number of passing motorists who didn't stop to help the panicked pair.

"It really hits home when you have small children yourself," he added.

"I couldn't believe my eyes that people just weren't interested in stopping.

"I was a bit hesitant at first with Covid, but the life of the little kiddie comes first.

"The mother of the child has texted me to send me her gratitude."

It's understood the baby, who hasn't been named, made a full recovery.
