Hero military dog injured in SAS raid to kill ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

A hero military dog was injured during the lethal raid on ISIS mastermind Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi , it has emerged.

The dog swooped into action on Saturday night in the mission led by US special forces and aided by SAS in Syria.

"Our canine, as they call -- I call it a dog, a beautiful dog, a talented dog -- was injured and brought back," Donald Trump said today.

The pooch hurt itself after it "went into the tunnel" in which evil Baghdadi killed himself with a suicide vest.

The US military confirmed the dog needed surgery but wouldn't release further details, including the dog's name.

US Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said: "The dog, the canine, the military working dog, performed a tremendous service, as they all do, in a variety of situations.

"Slightly wounded and fully recovering - but the dog is still in theatre, returned to duty, with its handler.

"So, we're not going to release just yet names of dogs or anything else. It's a classified unit and (we're) protecting the dog's identity."

It is thought to be unlikely more details about the pooch will emerge soon.

The video is as yet unconfirmed and the final confirmation of Baghdadi's death is underway while DNA and biometric testing is conducted, sources told  CNN.

Newsweek  claimed Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest after realising he had no chance of escape during the US special forces raid.

His two wives were also reportedly killed in the firefight, with no injuries to US forces.
