A man has gone missing after saving the life of a child during a tragic kayak accident in Kildare.
Gardai, the Civil Defence, and locals in the town of Athy, Co Kildare raced to the scene of a kayak reportedly overturning in the River Barrow.
A passerby raised the alarm after spotting a man holding a child above the water, according to the Kildare Nationalist.
The child was rescued by the passerby and treated at the scene by paramedics.
But tragically, the man then disappeared, and Gardai said that he hasn't been found.
The search operation has been called off for this evening.
Gardai told Dublin Live: "A multiagency search operation took place today, Sunday 28th February 2021 following reports of a kayak overturning in the River Barrow.
"A juvenile was rescued from the water and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
"A further person is believed to be still missing.
"The operation has ceased for tonight."
