Hero locals tackle wannabe thief who dragged woman, 20s, out of car in Finglas, North Dublin

A man has been arrested after a young woman was dragged out of her car in North Dublin

A mass hunt got underway in Finglas on Tuesday after the man threatened the woman before getting her out of the car.

Hero locals saw the incident and rushed in to help. They managed to grab him and get him back out before he ran away on foot.

Gardai followed up and tracked a suspect to a shop in Charlestown.

A man, 20s, was arrested and taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Finglas assisted by Community Policing, the District Detective Unit and K-District Community Action Team have arrested a male, aged in his 20s, for the attempted theft of a vehicle on Tuesday, 18th February 2020.

"At approximately 5.45pm on Tuesday, 18th February 2020, a man, aged in his 20s, attempted to steal a car which was parked outside a domestic residence in the Finglas area. The driver of the car, a female aged in her 20s, was threatened and forcibly removed from the vehicle.

"An altercation occurred between the suspect and a number of individuals who arrived at the scene to assist the female. The suspect was removed from the vehicle and he subsequently fled the scene on foot.

"A number of Garda units attended the scene and the suspect’s movements were tracked to a retail premises in Charlestown. He was arrested by Gardaí and taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984."
