Hero locals race to save lovable ladrador after he fell under DART while exiting train at South Dublin Station

A Dublin dog has some heroic passengers to thank he fell between the gap of a train and platform.

They say cats have nine lives, but one lucky labrador might think he's got a few in the bank himself after people rescued him from under the carriage of a train.

The terrifying scenario unfolded at Shankill DART station on Monday morning when the pup's "legs gave way" as he exited the train.

He then "slipped down" along with his lead according to his owner, who desperately tried to claw him back.

The race against time was then on over fears that the train was about to start moving again - but quick-thinking passengers were quickly on the case.

The owner told how one man "sprinted" down to the driver to stop him moving off while others helped him until the hearty black lab resurfaced.

His relieved owner never got to thank many of the passengers personally, as they had boarded the train and left right after they got the dog out - so his owner took to a local Facebook group to express his and the lovable pup's gratitude to everyone involved.

He said: "I just want to say thank you so much to the people who helped out in the DART station this morning when my black lab fell between the train and the platform.

"It was a pretty horrific moment and I am so grateful to the guy who sprinted up to the driver to make sure that the train did not pull off.

"I didn't get a chance to say thank you as the train had pulled off before I could."

He added that his dog was fine but just a little shaken up, so he took him to the vet to make sure.

The grateful owner went on to say the reason he took him home on the DART was because the dog had gotten tired after they walked to Bray.

A spokesman for Irish Rail commended the passengers for coming to the aid of the stricken dog and doing the right thing by alerting the driver of the train.

He added: "We're delighted that we were able to assist a customer on what could have been a very upsetting outcome."

The spokesman added: "It's been a very eventful few days as far as dogs and Irish Rail are concerned, with Hamish and now this dog.

"Thankfully, both dogs were unharmed and we're very happy with how everything turned out."
