Hero Irishman drowns saving his child from rapids in Australia

A father of three from Ireland has died saving his son after the young boy slipped into water rapids.

Cassan Cowan, 49, had moved to Australia just 15 months ago and died at Wappa Falls in Queensland on Sunday, January 2.

He bravely managed to push his son out of the water rapids but Cassan did not resurface.

Known to his friends as Cass, his body was discovered later that evening.

Cassan, originally from Donoughmore in Co Cork, leaves behind his beloved wife Trish and three young children – Ormond, 11, Ella, nine, and seven-year-old Torin.

His wife Trish has paid tribute to her husband, whom she described as a “fabulous father” and “passionate about politics and social justice”.

In a statement, she said: “Our Irish and Australian families and friends are mourning the loss of Cassan, our father, husband, brother, friend.

“Last Sunday at Wappa Falls, Cassan jumped into the falls to rescue his sons; he pushed them out of the water, but was unable to save himself."
