A hero grandmother has braved the raging fire to rescue a badly burned koala .
Toni Doherty was driving past Port Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, and spotted the animal crawling through the woods in the bushfire.
She told 9 News : "He just went straight into the flames and I just jumped out of the car and went straight to him."
Mobile phone footage shows Toni grabbing the koala off a tree and quickly pouring water over the injured animal.
The koala can be heard wailing in pain when Toni tries to cool it with water.
She then bundles the animal with her shirt and rushes to Port Macquarie Koala Hotel where he is being closely monitored by staff.
Toni named the koala Lewis, after one of her seven grandchildren.
The 14-year-old koala suffered serious burns as hospital staff said its health 'hangs in the balance'.
Cheyne Flanagan, who took care of the koala at the hospital said: "He is probably 50-50 at this stage.
"His feet are completely burnt and he has burns to his chest and stomach. His nose is burned.
"He has been bandaged and given antibiotics but will take a lot of looking after, if he pulls through."
The gran-of-seven reunited with Lewis yesterday to check on his recovery.
'Lewis' is being given lots of fluid and has been munching on eucalyptus leaves.
The devastating fire has claimed one-third of koala population in the Port Macquarie region, according to reports.
The hospital is also taking care of four other koalas that were injured in the bushfire.
They have set up a fundraising page to call for animal lovers to help rebuild the koalas' habitat.
