Hero garda swims to rescue man in difficulty in sea near Wexford

A hero garda swam 200 metres and rescued a man who was in distress in the water on Saturday night.

The brave officer dived into the harbour after gardai received a report that a man had been seen swimming and looked to be in difficulty.

A Garda spokesman said: “At approximately 11pm on Saturday, April 11, Gardai received a report of a man in distress in the water at Paul Quay, Wexford Town.

“A Garda member entered the water, secured the man and returned him to shore.

“No serious injuries were sustained and the man was taken to Wexford General Hospital for treatment."

It is understood the man had entered the water a short time before the alarm was raised.

Meanwhile, Rescue 117, the Irish Coastguard Search & Rescue Helicopter, had been on the way  to a false alarm in Co Wicklow and it was diverted to assist in the rescue mission.

However, the man, who is not believed to have suffered any injuries, had been taken out of the water by the time it reached Wexford.
